There are some habits that feel productive. And then there are habits that feel nourishing. Sauna feels like both.
For a long time, I thought saunas belonged in luxury hotels, spa weekends, or wellness content created by people who wake up at 5AM and drink chlorophyll water. But recently I started looking into the actual science behind sauna use… and what I found surprised me. Turns out sitting in a warm room and doing absolutely nothing may be one of the most supportive things you can do for your body.
I get it, it’s trendy, it’s aesthetic but the truth is your body responds to heat in ways that are honestly kind of incredible. And maybe that’s the reminder we need right now: Healing isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it’s about creating the conditions that allow your body to soften, regulate, and recover.
So… what actually happens in a sauna?
A sauna is essentially a controlled heat exposure. When your body heats up, your heart rate increases, blood vessels widen, circulation improves, and your body activates systems involved in recovery and adaptation.
Researchers sometimes compare certain cardiovascular responses during sauna use to light-to-moderate exercise because your heart begins working harder to circulate blood efficiently through the body.
Your heart may love sauna more than you think
This was the part that made me pause. Some of the strongest sauna research comes from Finland (where sauna culture is deeply woven into everyday life).
One long-term study followed over 2,000 people for more than 20 years and found that people who used the sauna more frequently had lower rates of fatal cardiovascular disease and lower overall mortality than those who used it only once per week. Now—to be clear—this does not mean sauna replaces movement, nutrition, sleep, or medical care. But it does suggest sauna may become one beautiful piece of the bigger picture.
Heat appears to support:
– healthier blood pressure patterns
– improved blood vessel function
– reduced arterial stiffness
– better circulation over time
Your heart is carrying you through every version of your life. Maybe once in a while it deserves 20 minutes of warmth.
It helps your nervous system remember safety
This one feels less measurable… but maybe more important. You walk into a sauna, and your only job is to sit. No notifications, no productivity. It becomes a meditation. Sauna use has been associated with relaxation, improved mood, lower perceived stress, and increases in feel-good neurochemicals involved in emotional regulation.
And honestly? In a world that constantly rewards urgency…there’s something rebellious about resting. Resting is the greatest thing to heal your nervous system.
You may sleep better
One thing people consistently report after sauna sessions: “I slept like a rock.”
Heat encourages your body into a recovery state and the cooling period afterward may support deeper relaxation.
Many people notice:
– easier sleep onset
– feeling calmer before bed
– waking up less tense
– feeling mentally clearer the next day
Not because the sauna magically fixes life, but because recovery changes how life feels.
Sauna is an act of self-love
This might be my favourite benefit. When we think health, we often think restriction. But sauna invites another possibility: Receive, be still, slow down. Health isn’t only about extending life. It’s also about increasing the quality of the moments inside it.
A quick hydration note
If you start adding sauna into your routine: Drink water. You lose fluid through sweat and dehydration can leave you feeling dizzy, headachy, tired, and generally not amazing.
My personal rule:
– Hydrate before
– Bring water afterward
– Add electrolytes if you sweat heavily, stay longer, or do this 4x or more every week
Water is not optional self-care.

– 1–2 sessions per week
– 10–20 minutes
– Listen to your body
– Step out if dizzy or uncomfortable
– Build your routine slowly, eventually you can reap the cardiovascular benefits of going 3-4x a week
We spend so much of life trying to force transformation, but heat teaches something different.
Expansion.
Softening.
Trust.
Maybe health isn’t always found in intensity. Sometimes it looks like sitting quietly in the warmth long enough to remember your body has been trying to help you all along. Afterall, your health is the most valuable currency of all. Take care of yourself.
